If the current HP Printer Assistant app won't open, try downloading and installing the most recent version of the app over the old one. From the link, download the HP Support Assistant installation. When prompted to confirm, run the installer and select Yes. Check if the app works after it has been restarted. Uninstall HP Support Assistant and then install the newest version from the HP Support Assistant website to fix this error:

The software results page for your printer displays with the default operating system selected.
If you need to change the operating system, click Change, select your version, and then click Change.
Under the Driver heading, click Download.
During the installation, select the Typical or Recommended type of installation when prompted by the software installer.
